CONSUMER REPORTS:
Engine type: 2006? Evinrude E-Tec, (marine/outboard)  Location: Pensacola, Florida  Initials: J.K.  Date: 6/25/2008

" I live in Pensacola, Florida and have boated all my life.  I wasn't aware of the problem with ethanol gas and boat motors.  Unfortunately, I found out the hard way after getting stranded in the Gulf of Mexico and found my fuel line eat into on a less than two year old Evinrude E-tec motor.  Thank God my son and I were not blown up, but were towed to safety.  I've done alot of research since this happened on June 14, 2008.  I'm very dissappointed that Evinrude didn't notify me since my engine was under a warranty.  There should be a recall and a solution to the problem asap.  I'm also finding out that gas stations are not labeling their pumps even if I had known.  This is a tremendous problem and only going to get worse if some type of information is not broadcast to boat owners.  If you know about it, you can find lots of information, but God help you if you are unaware.  Thanks for your website and the information you are providing.  "

Engine type: 2006 Evinrude E-Tec 50 hp, (marine/outboard)  Location: Port Charlotte, Florida  Initials: D.R.  Date: 2/19/2009

" ...My motor, E-Tec 50 with 60 hours on it 2006, had a problem with the motors fuel lines.
Like I said, the insides of some turned to jello and then caused problems with the pumps and injectors.
The fuel was treated with a stabilizer, and had no ethanol. I always buy my fuel from the same station that advertize that they use not ethanol.  I use the same fuel and stabilizer in my larger boat with twin Yamaha’s  without any problems. Actually my big boat sits around longer and hold 200 gallons of fuel and the little boat that I had the problem with only holds 20 gallons.

Only the motor’s fuel hoses had problems, not the hoses from the tank to the filter, filter to blub. Only the hosed supplied by BRP.
I would like to have these hoses tested and the boats hoses to see if the bombardier Es1763 hoses are defective. Any ideas who can do such a test.
I thought about sending them to the USCG because if these hoses are defective then they pose a fire hazard... "

Fuel-Testers Note: Inquiry sent to BRP (Jeffrey.Cooper@BRP.com) on 2/20/09 requesting response if hoses are defective and/or not resistant to E10; As of 3/16/09 we have not received a response from manufacturer BRP/Evinrude.

Engine type: All years Artic Cat Snowmobile,  Location: Maine  Initials: P.L..  Date: 2/10/2009

I am a Arctic Cat Dealer for 25 years. I have EFI 2 Stroke engines that have in tank fuel pumps. These pumps are failing in less than 5 miles. I have proven this senario on 5 different ocassions-5 different sleds-5 different brands of E-10 fuel. The pumps are failing right out of the crate. Fuel lines are deterioriating-supposedly "fuel compatable" lines from the factory as OEM. I have never witnessed this before. What is happening to the pumps? HELP!!!  "

Fuel-Testers Note: Inquiry sent to Artic Cat corportate office asking if engines parts/motors have always been designed to be resistant to E10 fuel, awaiting response...

Quik-Check results - Picture gas with and without ethanol alcohol.

Right: Non-ethanol gas (no alcohol or water) -
Blue Quik-Check drop settles to bottom.
Left: Gas contaminated with alcohol and water.
Quik-Check turns sample bright blue.

Engine type:  2001 BMW 330i. (auto) Location: Gainesville, Florida   Initials: C.P.C.  Date: 8/18/2008

"  The fuel pump and filter of my 2001 BMW 330i is currently being replaced for the SECOND time in one week due to E10 contamination in Exxon's premium gasoline at the station at the northeast corner of (removed address) and Interstate 75 in Gainesville, Florida.

The total cost of towing, replacing the necessary parts, and adding new fuel so far is $1,124.64, which is only for the first replacement.  The car is presently at the BMW dealership, (removed dealer name) Imports, which reports a flood of cars being towed in for fuel pump replacement due to contaminated gasoline up to FIVE TIMES per car and counting.

A friend who owns a Mercedes says his dealership, (removed dealer name) Motors (Gainesville), tells him the same thing is happening with Mercedes cars.  Thanks for your helpful information. W.W.B.  "

Engine type:  2008 BMW. (auto) Location: Gainesville, Florida   Initials: B.C.  Date: 8/15/2008

"  Hello, I live in Gainesville, Florida and today brought my brand new BMW X5 to the dealership for service.  I was/am having issues with the car starting.  They informed me that my fuel pump is contaminated and not covered by my all comprehensive warranty.  The damage is to the tune of $1,000.00.  BMW also informed me that in the past couple weeks they have had to replace roughly 75 of these in my area.  Due to the premium level of my car I can only run premium in it and have never bought gas from a small company.  The only companies I use are Mobil, Exxon and occasionally Shell.  I almost exclusively fuel my car at Exxon (removed address) in Gainesville, Florida.  However, it appears that all these precautions were futile.  And what's worse is that I have to repair this problem and there is no guarantee that it isn't going to happen again in a month.  This is ridiculous!  When I pay $115.00 to fill my car with gasoline I expect it not to also ruin my fuel injectors and cost me an additional thousand bucks.  Something needs to be done about this and soon.  Thakn you for your website and I just wanted to inform you of the issues.  "
